VIRGIN ISLANDS
American Black Duck (Anas rubripes)
Male at Compass Point, St. Thomas, 27 January 2003. Photo © by Floyd Hayes. First record for the Virgin Islands; previously recorded from the West Indies only in Puerto Rico and the Bahamas. Found in the evening of 27 January, this bird was last seen in the morning of 28 January 2003. Although blurry, the yellowish bill, greyish head and neck contrasting with the blackish wings and body, and purplish speculum are readily visible. The whitish streak visible on the wing or flank was never observed on the living bird and its source is unknown.
